BIOGRAPHY

Garrick Soon is the founder of Protoking. He began his career as an apprentice in a tool and die making company, and later mastered plastic injection moulding from a veteran moulder. He grew to become a prototyping and Design for Manufacturing specialist.

Garrick is familiar with different industry standards, as well as various materials and advanced manufacturing techniques. Today, Garrick leads an international team of designers and engineers which seeks to "Empower Ideas". Through Protoking, he offers a range of services from product conceptualisation, industrial design, R&D, to prototyping and manufacturing. His work is based on a practical approach to applying design thinking.

PORTFOLIO

Copenhagen Wheel

MIT Senseable Lab engaged us to fabricate the Copenhagen wheel cover. It was a challenge which was restricted by conventional prototyping and machining methods, specifically the undercut slots cater for the wheel spokes. We devised an unconventional fabrication thought process with a highly customized cutting tool, which solved the problem.

Finger Actuator

Roceso's finger therapeutic device is design to use soft robotics actuators to help stroke patient to exercise their fingers. The initial 3D printed prototype was well tested and proven that the concept work efficiently. But due to its design and shape, conventional manufacturing is not able to fabricate. The original shape cannot be compromised as its play an important role to the functionality. With these requirements, our DFM solution for the actuator not only break the challenge of making the design production ready, but also retain the remarkable and efficient functioning concept.

Knee Surgical Trial

Making good use of our experience in fabrication technique and knowledge in material characteristics, we fabricated an alternative with a metal frame and plastic housing to the originally heavy, costly and all-metal structure. Our new design allowed the products to cut 91% of its original weight, without compromising on its structural integrity, and helped our client achieve up to 80% cost reduction.

Solar Window PV Module

Development of a PV (Photovoltaic) module for the Bosch Solar Window. The miniaturising of the module was a breakthrough, achieved by an integral solution through material and mechanical engineering. we successfully reduced the total thickness of the overall product from 25.4 mm (1") to 11.2 mm, a project that see us through various untested grounds.

Inmolded RFID Chip

The seamless integration of electronics into plastics has become the new front for product development, as the industry looks for ways to miniaturize and cost down. There has been many innovations in these areas but molding in a RFID chip remains expensive and prohibitive. Catering for the popularised use of RFID chip, we started our research and development on unconventional inmolding technique and succeeded inmolding in a low-cost RFID chip without overheating the components. This means that the embedded RFID chip can now be made at a significantly lower price, without resorting to expensive ceramic RFID chips , which is resistant to a higher temperature.
