The pandemic has disrupted global supply chains in the past year and a half, impacting how businesses operate and meet changing consumer behaviours. For instance, consumer shopping has shifted towards e-commerce, with expectations for faster deliveries.
In order to respond to supply chain challenges rapidly and thrive in the new norm, the supply chain industry is stepping up on digital transformation through technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics.
At The Makings of a Smart Supply Chain Roundtable co-organised by IPI and Supply Chain Asia on 26 August, technologists and logistics industry players discussed the challenges they face in technology adoption at different stages of the supply chain – from product inventory and assembling to the transport required for last-mile service.
Melanie Tan, Product Manager at SWAT, pointed out that adoption of technologies and digital solutions should be as easy as possible for the vendors to reduce any potential resistance towards these new practices. The other speakers at the roundtable echoed this sentiment and emphasised that change management and obtaining buy-in from all stakeholders, including operations staff, is required for digitalisation efforts to be successful in a sector that’s often seen as highly traditional.
