Companies that do not innovate risk being obsolete and irrelevant in today’s fast-moving and competitive business world. Open innovation allows companies to adopt external ideas and technologies in their own businesses while allowing their unused ideas to be utilised by others, which would result in greater overall business growth.

The Open Innovation Workshop offers innovation and R&D managers in SMEs, public research institutes and government agencies insights into how open innovation can be applied to their organisations and field of work. Through this workshop, participants will also gain access to tools and platforms from IPI to accelerate their innovation journeys through collaboration and co-development strategies.

  • This is a hands-on workshop. Participants are advised to identify some technologies need or problem statements as materials to prepare for the practical sessions.

TRAINERS' PROFILES


Dr Sze Tiam Lin
Head
Innovation and Technology
IPI

With more than 18 years of experience in commercialisation of new technologies and IP management, Dr Sze leads the IPI team in addressing technology and innovation needs of enterprises from the industry in areas spanning across Infocomm Technology & Electronics, Energy & Environment, Materials & Chemicals, Health & Personal Care, Manufacturing, amongst others.

Prior to IPI, Dr Sze was the Senior Vice President at ETPL (now A*ccelerate), the commercialisation arm of Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). He worked on commercialising new technologies and, being a pioneer, contributed to several best practices in industry-research collaboration, licensing, technology and market intelligence, IP management and strategy, and licensing professional skills and training.

Dr Sze is a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) and a council member of the Executive Committee of the Licensing Executive Society (LES), Singapore. He holds a PhD and a Bachelor of Engineering in Automatic Control & Systems Engineering from the University of Sheffield, UK and received an executive education in Strategic R&D Management at INSEAD, Fontainebleau.

Michael Goh
Deputy Head

Before joining IPI, Michael was the Deputy Director, Enterprise Development Department, Infrastructure Capability Development Division in Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), where he worked with public agencies to develop IP management capabilities. Michael was also with ETPL (now A*ccelerate), the commercialisation arm of Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), where he was involved in commercialising technologies from research, managing technology portfolios, undertaking technology and commercial intelligence projects, as well as developing go-to-market strategies for new technologies. Michael spent eight years as a project manager of defence related projects before ETPL.

Michael graduated with a Masters of Philosophy and a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology.

Alvin How
Head
Food, Healthcare and Chemicals
IPI

Alvin How works with local food, healthcare and chemicals related enterprises to understand their innovation gaps and connect them to enabling technologies, innovations and know-how from an extensive network of technology partners.

With more than five years of industry experience working as a Senior Chemist in chemical firms, Alvin has accumulated knowledge in formulating, developing and providing technical assistance for industrial resins, decorative resins and other wood related resins. He has completed numerous studies on chemical compounds, materials surface, polymer systems, and also successfully supported multiple scale-up trials in Malaysia, Thailand and China.

Alvin holds a Masters of Business Administration from Singapore Management University and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore.
