Low Carbon Solutions - Maximising renewable energy potential for industrial buildings

Background

JTC has been deploying solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across its developments through established solar programmes such as JTC Solar Roof and JTC Solar Land, making solar deployment a core component of its sustainability efforts.

As JTC continues to expand its solar footprint, it faces certain challenges, including technical constraints associated with rooftop deployment and limited availability of suitable rooftop spaces. In view of this, JTC is exploring cost-efficient technologies that can unlock more renewable energy opportunities beyond conventional rooftop solar PV.

JTC is now seeking alternative renewable energy solutions that can be deployed at its buildings, beyond the current focus on rooftop solar installations.

Requirements

Proposed technologies and/or solutions should meet the following criteria:

  • Technology readiness level (TRL) of 7 or above
  • Scalable and cost-effective
  • Able to ensure safety and continuity of operations
  • Technologies and/or solutions must be innovative and have not been deployed in large scale projects

Desired Outcome

The envisioned solution should enable JTC to unlock additional renewable energy opportunities by increasing renewable energy generation by approximately 10–20% through one or more of the following methods:

  • Deployment of alternative renewable energy solutions, e.g. wind or a hybrid solar-wind systems
  • Adoption of higher energy yield (relative to the current 20–24%) or more durable solar PV solutions for rooftop installations rooftops (currently 20-25 years)
  • Maximisation of solar PV deployment on non-conventional building surfaces, e.g. solar films or Building Attached Photovoltaics (BAPV) solutions that can be seamlessly connected to the grid

Possible Solution

  • Maximised renewable energy generation on rooftops through, but not limited to, high-efficiency panels, adjustable or bifacial modules, and lightweight structural systems
  • Integrated vertical or facade-mounted PV systems where feasible
  • Deployment of complementary renewable energy sources such as small-scale wind turbines or hybrid solar–wind solutions
