TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Currently due to costly treatment operation, a large percentage of paper sludge is forwarded to traditional waste handling operations (such as landspread, landfill, incineration and composting). Disposal fees are costly and only a small percentage of this waste is recycled.

Paper sludge is mainly composed of cellulose fibers, which are made of carbon subunits with lignin. Cellulose fibers are formed of very long chains of carbon, and they are very hard to assimilate by microorganisms which are specialized for biogas methane production. The technology breaks these long chains down to smaller and easily utilizable fragments

The enzyme is cost effective as compared to generic cellulose breakers and its special design for paper industry which makes the paper waste more affordable as a renewable source.

With the proposed solution a costly-disposed waste material can be converted to 3 different valuable substances such as biogas, liquid fertilizer and solid fertilizer in addition to solving the waste disposal problem. Since paper industry current pays money per tonne of the paper sludge disposal, a Biogas plant starts having a positive cash flow from the moment it collects the waste.

The enzymatic technology can be adopted by different players along the value chain. The paper plants waste disposal treatment companies or paper plants themselves can utilize this technology to treat, reduce and transform their waste.

Biogas producers can also process and treat the paper waste on-site and integrate it into their biogas production facility.
