1. Conduct road tunnel in-situ inspection checks for defects on bare concrete walls behind cladding

Background

UPDATE 1: Tech Briefing pdf is now available for download in ATTACHMENT. Do also take note that the min crack width to detect is revised to 0.4mm.

UPDATE 2: Refer to Additional Info below for the Proposal Submission Instructions

  • Current checks on the structural concrete wall require the removal and reinstallation of wall claddings
  • It requires 4 workers and takes an inspection time of 20 mins per cladding unit.
  • Proposed product will be used for the maintenance inspections of the tunnels. The product needs to be able to conduct in-situ checks for cracks and spalling on bare concrete walls without removal of cladding and within 10mins per cladding unit.
  • The proposed product will be used by tunnel inspection contractors.

Requirements

  • Operating enviornment is in road tunnel (KPE, MCE) at normal room temperature. Inspection can only be done from 12am to 5am and lane closure will be required.
  • Wall claddings refer to vitreous enamel 14mm thick wall claddings (1.5mm enamel steel + 12mm aluminium honeycomb + 0.5mm steel coated balancer sheet). The claddings are typically 1.2m wide and 3.5m high, with a 350mm gap between the cladding and the concrete wall. The inspection equipment can be portable by the worker or secured on a normal sized vehicle.
  • The cladding is metallic and has an air gap between it and the wall. The metal may attenuate the electromagnetic and acoustic energy, and make the detections challenging using scanning technology such as optical, thermal scanning.
  • Prototype must Identify and detect cracks exceeding 0.1mm in width and spalling area bigger than 0.0025 sqm on bare concrete walls.
  • During the pilot deployment, the product must complete inspection within 10 minutes per cladding unit. The product must be able to complete the inspection of 24 cladding units within 300 minutes with no more than 2 workers. The equipment should be portable or easily transported by a normal sized vehicle. The setting up or packing of the equipment should not take more than 30 minutes.

Desired Outcome

  • Conduct in-situ inspection checks to identify and detect cracks exceeding 0.4mm in width and spalling area bigger than 0.0025 sqm on bare concrete walls, performed within 10mins per cladding unit.

  • Reduce time required for inspection per cladding area by 50% (20min to 10min), Manpower required for proposed solution should be not more than 2 workers.

Development Timeframe

Q2 2020 – Prototype

Q1 2021 – Pilot Deployment

Q3 2021 – Implementation

Additional Info

What solutions we are NOT interested in?

  • The use of manpower with scaffolding/boom lift/lorry crane system to replace cladding, even if the process is within 10 minutes per cladding
  • The use of technologies that will result in radiation that is harmful for health or structures

Market Potential for proposed solution/product

  • Successful solution needed by 2Q 2021, will be spec into new 2 years + inspection contract for 3Q 2021
  • Successful solutions can be scaled and extended to users in the civil industry, specifically in the inspection and maintenance of buildings and bridges with concealed panels.
